It seems that the development of Ubuntu for Android is over . It remains to get a formal statement on the issue by Canonical yet but statements were found in a bug report that mentioned that the project no longer is no more in active development.
This little piece of information came courtesy of the written report on Launchpad by Matthew Paul Thomas. Thomas is with Canonical and Launchpad external repository is used by most applications of Ubuntu. Canonical described the project at the time as "all the functionality of high-end Android terminal should be at the end of 2012" .
Ubuntu for Android was a physical configuration that allowed users to connect your smartphone to a monitor and have access to a full and normal version of Ubuntu as if they were sitting in front of a laptop or desktop computer. What was seen at the time seemed interesting especially regarding how some data such as email and text messages would be available on both your phone and your computer. It was also assumed that you could make and answer calls while the terminal is connected to the monitor.
That said though interesting as a whole there seemed to be something that many end users need to be and so it proved . Of course there will be the geeks of the public who are likely to use it and be happy with it but they are a minority. Canonical at the time and said to bring this project further still needed a partner to help them. Finally those who will not give up on hope can take comfort in the company of Mark Shuttleworth said that if any manufacturer would still shows open interest. This is undoubtedly the ultimate accolade that Ubuntu Phone OS needs and unlike Ubuntu for Android the manufacturers seems to be interested .
